Sure your iPod is cool but there is plenty more you can do with it with the help of accessories. Several companies such as Griffin, Belkin, Kensington, Logitech and JBL offer a variety of nifty gadgets from speakers to back up battery packs. Here are a few that may peak your interest.

iPod Speakers

Get rid of those annoying earphones! Several companies such as JBL, Logitech and Bose offer high quality speakers that have docks for placing your iPod on. Place your speakers anywhere you want and let music from your iPod fill the room. Apart from looking pretty, many iPod speakers often come with several useful features such as LCD displays (for time etc.), remote controls to control your iPod from a distance, AM/FM radio (with presets) and the ability to set multiple alarms with or without music from your iPod. Many speakers will also charge your iPod while it is docked and can also use AA batteries for battery back up. Docks to fit all sizes of iPods are usually available and speaker sizes range from very small portable models to much larger ones. Prices range from less than to several hundred dollars depending on the brand.

FM Transmitters

Several companies such as Griffin and Belkin offer small FM transmitters (e.g. iTrips) that can be attached to your iPod (either headphone or dock connector depending on the model) allowing you to transmit your music to your car radio or any other radio. You can manually select a suitable frequency out of an allowable range or let some models search for an appropriate frequency for you. They often have tiny LCDs and presets so you can save your preferred settings. Many models come with integrated auto chargers that will plug into your car’s 12V cigarette lighter port. Because they are low power transmitters though you may hear interference from other channels especially in crowded urban areas and they draw power from the iPod itself shortening it’s battery life. There is no denying the charm of an iTrip though especially on long road trips.

iPod Audio and Video Cables

Ever wish you could hook up your iPod to the TV to view your videos on the big screen or play your music through your stereos? There are a variety of AV cables available on the market. You can buy RCA stereo cables (left and right audio) which connect either to the iPod headphone jack or the dock connector, to listen to music on your speakers or through your PC/laptop. This may allow you to avoid buying an iPod speaker. Stereo cables that connect to the dock port offer better sound (line quality) than ones that connect to the headphone jack. The dock connector ones will also allow you to control volume through your stereo so you don’t have to use your iPod every time. Or you may just opt to buy a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable which is handy to connect your iPod to your car stereo (for much more reliable sound than using an iTrip). Most audio cables sell for under .

To play your iPod video, touch or iPhone videos on your TV, composite or component AV cables that connect to either the headphone jack or dock connector are available from Apple and some other companies. Component cables have three cables for video (red, green and blue) and two for audio, and offer much better picture quality than composite which packs all the video information into one RCA cable. Apple’s cables can be much pricier than some other models. When trying to play video on your TV you may have to change some settings on the iPod itself to make it work. Then feel free to watch slideshows and all your videos on the big screen!

You may be better off buying a component or composite AV cable rather than a plain audio cable as you can use it just for sound also.

Ever wish your iPod power would last an entire road trip? Several companies offer compact battery back up packs that connect to your iPod dock connector which can significantly increase your iPod’s playing time. They can be of the rechargeable type or fitted with AAA batteries.

Headphone splitters

These aren’t solely iPod accessories but I couldn’t help but add them. Sick of sharing your one headphone pair with another person? With a splitter you can plug in other headphones so your friends/family can listen with you. You can even connect another MP3 player or iPod to the splitter to mix two tracks together, although its practical use may be limited. I have seen splitters for up to 5 headphones and/or MP3 players.
